Skyrim Creation Kit is the tool that Bethesda used to create Skyrim. It is also used by modders who make all the wonderful mods that we all love to utilise. Mods add so much to the existing game—they allow us to explore new lands, wear new clothing, wield new weapons, etc. They also ready bugs and enhance or completely overhaul gameplay elements.

How to Employ the Skyrim Creation Kit

I have taken upwardly modding in Skyrim and idea I would share my experiences, beginner to beginner. There are many fantabulous guides out at that place, but they are frequently written by experts who are very familiar with the tool and have therefore forgotten what it is like to be a beginner. I volition begin at the very start with:

  • How to install the kit
  • How to navigate the kit
  • How to start creating a mod yourself
Modded "Skyrim" is a beautiful game, rich with places to discover and creatures to kill. Not to mention the dragons! Learn how to use the Creation Kit to create your own mods.

How to Install the Skyrim Cosmos Kit

The beginning pace is to install the Creation Kit.

Log into Steam and navigate to Library and select Tools

  • Scroll downwardly to Skyrim Creation Kit, correct-click and select Install Game

Steam volition download the Creation Kit and add a brusque cut to it on your desktop. You are now ready to launch it and start learning how to create mods of your own.

Introduction to the Kit

At present that we accept the Creation Kit, open it and you will meet the following:

As yous tin run across, it is made upward of a number of separate windows called views.

  • The first is the Creation Kit itself, which has the menus and a number of buttons. The bulk of these buttons are not needed for a beginner, and then we will largely leave these alone at the moment.
  • The Object Window is where all the objects that you lot can add to mods are stored. Yous can see that the left-hand tree has all of the categories of objects and the right-hand console has the objects that are stored in a category. You volition utilise this window a lot while creating mods.
  • The Render Window renders your mod so that you lot can run across how it will wait in-game. You can move around inside the window and also zoom in and out (we will comprehend this in more detail soon).
  • The last window is the Cell View. This lists all the cells in Skyrim equally well as whatsoever that yous create for your mods. This volition as well list all the objects that you have added to your mods on the right-hand side.

The Nuts of Creating a Simple Skyrim Mod

At present that yous have a rudimentary understanding of what all the views do, it is time to start creating your first modern. To brainstorm:

The Creation Kit will at present load the Skyrim.esm file. This may accept some time, depending on your system's speed. You will get a warning, click Aye to all to suppress information technology.

Click "Yes to All" if you receive this warning when opening Skyrim.esm into the Skyrim Creation Kit.

Click "Yep to All" if you receive this alarm when opening Skyrim.esm into the Skyrim Cosmos Kit.

Now that the Creation kit has loaded all the objects from the main Skyrim.esm file, we are going to add an object so that nosotros tin practise movement and manipulation of objects in the render window. But earlier nosotros do that, we need to create our ain cells for our modernistic. To do this:

  • Click on the Prison cell View window and select UnownedCell on the left-hand side
Using the Cell View in the Skyrim Creation Kit to duplicate a cell to be used as a starting point for a new mod.

Using the Prison cell View in the Skyrim Cosmos Kit to duplicate a cell to be used as a starting point for a new mod.

  • Right-click on it and select Duplicate Cell
  • UnownedCellDUPLICATE001 * will announced in the list
  • Click on information technology and rename it. Ensure that the name doesn't contain any spaces
  • Edit information technology and select Interior Data
  • Modify the name to something more appropriate
  • Select all the objects in the right-hand pane and delete them

Note: you volition have to click on some other cell and back onto your new jail cell to see the changes.

Now that we accept an empty jail cell, it is time to add a new object to it.

Double click on your new cell so that the Creation Kit knows this is where y'all want the objects to be placed.

  • Click on the Object Window and open up WorldObjects and then Static, followed by Dungeons and finally Imperial and Small Room
  • Drag the object ImpRoomWall01 to the Render Window

How to Move About in the Render Window

The kickoff thing you volition demand to learn is how to move effectually in the Render Window. The controls chosen past Bethesda are unlike from near anything you lot take used earlier and will take a while to go used to. I advise practising moving around until you are used to information technology before building your get-go mod. This will salve you a lot of annoyance later on on. To move around the Render Window:

  • To move left, right, up and down (panning), concur down the mouse cycle and move in the management you want.
  • Zooming in and out is simple enough; merely use the mouse wheel every bit you lot do in many other games or applications.
  • Finally, to rotate the view, hold downwards the Shift fundamental and motility the mouse.

In one case you are totally happy, it is time to move to the next step, calculation more objects into the cell that makes up your mod.

The Snap to Grid and Snap to Angle buttons in the Skyrim Creation Kit are required to make connecting objects easier.

How to Add Objects to Your Mod's Cell

Now that we are happy moving around in the Return Window, it is fourth dimension to add together additional objects to your mod. Before we practice this, nosotros need to select two buttons to make connecting the objects together easier. On the Creation Kit, select the 2 buttons shown above; the Snap to Filigree and Snap to Angle buttons.

One final suggestion which saves a lot of time when you are new to the Cosmos Kit is to employ the Preview Object Window. To turn this on, go to View and select Preview Window. This will permit y'all to see what an object looks like without having to drag it into the Render Window and then deciding you don't like information technology or it is the wrong piece.

The Preview Object Window in the Skyrim Creation Kit allows you to look at an object before adding it to your mod, saving you a lot of time when selecting objects to use.

Adding objects into the prison cell is one of the trickiest parts to learn. It took me quite a while to get to the point where I was able to practice this chop-chop and easily. There are in fact 2 ways to do it, which y'all choose is up to personal preference. First, I will illustrate the frustration that this tin cause. Elevate NorRmSmWallFront01 into the Render Window. Now, drag and drop a 2d one into the window. You tin can see how this will look below.

Objects dragged into the Render Window in the Skyrim Creation Kit will often need significant amounts of manipulation to connect together.

How to Line up Objects

The ii walls are in totally different positions. Yous could move the pieces and so that they are together, but believe me, that is frustrating and very time-consuming. And so my advice to you is to never add objects similar this. It will drive you crazy and you will waste a lot of time and free energy lining things upwards. The ii methods to add objects then that they are lined upwards is:

  • Get-go, select the first object. Press Control D to duplicate it. Another object volition appear in the Jail cell View. The 2nd object is on superlative of the kickoff. You tin then drag it and click it easily into place adjacent to the start wall.
  • The second method is to elevate the object from the Object Window as before, but drag it on meridian of the original object. This method is less accurate than the first and I would recommend using only the showtime method for now.

How to Supervene upon Objects

Should you desire a different object than the first (for example a Corner piece), select the duplicate and press Control F. This volition allow you to replace the object with some other. Become ahead and brand your third wall piece NorRmSmCorIn01 .

  • To ensure that you take no gaps between the objects, zoom in and out and besides rotate your objects to bank check for gaps.
  • To rotate a piece, merely select it and printing and concur the right mouse button. When it is rotated so that the slice fits, allow go of the button.

Add another corner so that you lot have two wall pieces and 2 corners like this.

We have now created the first wall of our room using the Skyrim Creation Kit.

We have now created the offset wall of our room using the Skyrim Creation Kit.

Indistinguishable the Wall and Add together the Side Walls

At present, we can duplicate this whole wall to make the other wall of the room. To do this, drag a box around it by belongings down the left mouse button. You will see the selection boxes (the blue, green and crimson lines) displayed for all four pieces.

The selection boxes (with red, green and blue lines) show you which object you have selected in the Skyrim Creation Kit.

The pick boxes (with cerise, light-green and blue lines) show you which object you have selected in the Skyrim Creation Kit.

Press Control D to indistinguishable them and elevate them off to the left. Rotate them and so that they look like mine below.

Now our new room created in the Skyrim Creation Kit has two walls!

Now add together two side walls (NorRmSmWallSide01), one to either terminate using the same method as we did above. Now select the four pieces nosotros created before (either drag a box effectually them or printing Control and select them to create our group over again)

  • Elevate them until they click into the two wall pieces we simply created

  • To fill up the room upward, add ii NorRmSmMid01 (floor tiles)

Save and Playtest Your Room

At present that we have created a basic room, information technology is time to save it and playtest it.

  • Click on File and and then choose Salve
  • Give your new modernistic a name
  • Before leaving the Creation Kit, note down what you called your mod in the Jail cell View window. You will use this in-game when testing
  • Launch Skyrim and click on Information and enable your new modernistic, then click OK

Once Skyrim is open up:

  • Click on the Tilde key (ordinarily nether the escape key) and the panel will open.
  • Type in "coc" followed by the name you lot gave your mod in the Cell View window. My modern is called Robsroom, so I typed in "coc Robsroom".

"Coc stands" for "centre on prison cell", in instance you were curious! Now we accept created our start modern, get alee and wander around your new room, checking for any seams or graphical glitches that you lot will need to set up. Once you are happy with your room quit Skyrim and bask having finished your very first simple mod!

Happy Modding!

In this article, I have covered the very basics of using the Skyrim Creation Kit. Equally a learner myself, I found that the videos and tutorials I was following skipped too apace by the very basics. In that location are a number of small hurdles you demand to go over to exist able to efficiently use and savor the kit. These are:

  • Moving effectually the Render Window
  • Placing new objects in the Return Window so that they tin be continued to existing objects chop-chop and easily

Once nosotros have a familiarity with both of these concepts, nosotros looked at the diverse windows that brand up the Cosmos Kit:

The Creation Kit itself, with the menus and buttons y'all volition need to employ to create mods

  • Objects are listed in categories in the Object Window
  • Cells are listed in the Cell Window
  • Your mod is shown in 3D in the Return Window

Finally, we created a small Nordic room and tested it in-game to ensure that we had created a perfectly formed room. I hope that you enjoyed this article and it has helped you to ameliorate understand the Creation Kit. Information technology is a very powerful tool, if you look at Skyrim Nexus Mods and cheque out some of the wonderful mods created using it, you tin can see just how far this tool can take you.

Thanks for reading and happy modding!

I found the cosmos kit just fine on Steam. On the library tab there is a drop downwardly that says games click there to add the tools.

Non Dan on April 23, 2020:

Sure dan. It would crave hiring voice actors, if you want voiced dialogue. Otherwise, even for those like us who have no existent modding experience, it's possible. It would have years of form, but by the end you'd be a top notch modder!

Ovenstent on August 07, 2018:

Hello, thanks for this very articulate tutorial !

At the end you said that the control is coc + name of the plug-in, but is information technology not coc + name of the cell ? The start didn't work for me, while the 2d worked perfectly ;)
